Tests by the National Bureau of Standards and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, which are very authoritative sources, have shown that well placed awnings can reduce the summer temperature in a room by 8 to 15 degrees.
One test by the Bureau of Standards has shown the effects of installing awnings on two windows of a 400 square foot room. Without the awnings, the room needed a one horsepower 220 volt air conditioner.
