Garage Doors & So Much More

Posted by

Since winter is right around the corner, it is important to prepare your home & exterior doors for the upcoming cold temperatures. Maintaining your doors for winter months can help in many ways!

If you feel cold air entering your home, replacing worn out weatherstripping is a great way to cut your heating bill along with keeping the warm air inside your home. In many cases the weatherstrip can be purchased at your local hardware store and is a relatively easy fix!

Yearly Maintenance

Normal wear & tear can occur on your door after regular use, so regular maintenance is important. Below is a short checklist you can follow:

  1. Inspect hinges for damage or excessive wear
  2. Lubricate each hinge using a multi-purpose household oil, a non-stick cooking spray, or vegetable oil
  3. Check for installation screws that may be over-tightened or under-tightened. For new doors, the hinges may be too tight. Back off screws 1/4 of turn.
  4. Also check the door closers. If squeaking is localized to the closer, lubricate the connecting pins, or replace closer if necessary

Door Finish

If you have a wood door, it’s very important to make sure they are finished and sealed. Over time certain areas may wear down, leaving the raw wood exposed. Sealing the door before winter can prevent the wood expanding & contracting along with warping during the temperature changes.
