Are you having some problems with your garage door? Not sure if you need to call for garage door repair? Or perhaps you are concerned that the door may not be operating safely. June is National Safety Month, and for us at Joe Wilde Company that means helping you know if your garage door is operating safely and efficiently.
Here are a few quick ways to check the safety and current operation quality of your garage door. These checkpoints will help you know when it’s time to call in the garage door professionals.
Look and Listen to Your Garage Door
Let’s start with a visual and auditory inspection of the garage door and its parts. Stand inside the garage with the garage door closed. Look over the door sections, springs, cables, rollers, pulleys, and mounting hardware. Is there any obvious wear and tear? Is there rust or deterioration? Check the cables closely for wear or fraying. Go outside and inspect the weather stripping. Is it broken or deteriorating? It may be time to replace some of your garage door parts.
Open and close the door while listening for grinding or scraping sounds. Do you hear anything usual? Does the door struggle to open? If something doesn’t look or sound quite right, it could be a sign of a serious issue and a pending breakdown. It’s time to call the pros of Joe Wilde Company to perform a tune-up service. We can get your door and opener back into great working condition and help prevent future breakdowns!
Three Simple Tests for Your Garage Door
There are three tests you can easily perform that will instantly inform you if your garage door’s safety has been compromised. If your door fails one of these tests, it’s time to call in the pros!
Garage Door Balance Test: Close the garage door and disconnect it from the automatic opener system. You should now be able to lift the door manually. The door should lift smoothly with little resistance and stay fully open. If the door is difficult to open or does not remain open when lifted, it may be out of balance. It’s time to have it serviced by a trained technician.
Reversing Mechanism Test: With the garage door fully open and connected to the automatic opener, lay a piece of wood (such as a 2×4) on the floor at the opening where the door would touch the floor. Push the garage door opener button to close the door. When the garage door touches the wood, the door should automatically reverse and open. If the door does not automatically reverse, it’s time to call the pros at Joe Wilde Company to have it serviced.
Sensor Beam Test: Just above the floor on both sides of the garage door are light beam transmitters. These sensors detect when objects are in the way of the door closing. With the garage door open fully, push the garage door opener button to close the door. Wave a long object (such as a broomstick) in front of one of the sensors to break the light beam. The garage door should reverse. If the door does not reverse and reopen, clean the sensors or adjust their alignment and repeat the test. If the door still does not reverse and reopen, it’s time to have it serviced by our trained technician.
